Jonathan Muecke - Experiments with Space and Material

Jonathan Muecke (* 1983 in Wyoming, USA) is a designer and architect based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He became known for his experimental exploration of archetypal pieces of furniture such as chairs, tables and benches. After studying architecture at Iowa State University, an internship at Herzog & de Meuron in Basel and a master's degree in design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, he has been working on his own projects since 2010. Muecke focuses on the properties of individual materials and explores their effect in space with the help of precise shapes, scales and proportions.

His designs thus combine a high material standard with a precise, spatial idea - creating furniture that goes beyond its pure function. For Knoll, he designed the Muecke Wood Collection with the Muecke Chair and Muecke Table, which epitomises his minimalist yet experimental approach to design. He has been honoured with numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious USA Knight Fellowship in 2014. His work is represented in important collections such as the Vitra Design Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. For Hay he designed the Wood Box Coffee Table, which exemplifies his minimalist yet experimental design approach.
