About Jørn Utzon

The Danish architect and designer Jørn Utzon (born in Copenhagen in 1918) is regarded as one of the most important architects of the 20th century. He became world-famous for the Sydney Opera House, whose sculptural roof forms are now considered a symbol of Australia. Utzon was born in Copenhagen in 1918 and grew up in Aalborg, where the work of his father, Aage Utzon – a yacht designer and naval architect – had a lasting influence on him. His proximity to the harbour, shipyards and nautical structures shaped his understanding of form, construction and Material from an early age.

These maritime influences are also reflected in his furniture and lighting designs. For example, the Utzon JU1 pendant light, now produced by &Tradition, with its distinctive collar shape and clean lines, is reminiscent of the industrial silhouette of a ship.

After studying architecture in Copenhagen, Jørn Utzon worked with Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright, amongst others, before founding his own practice in 1950. Alongside the Sydney Opera House, his most important works include Bagsværd Church, the Kuwaiti Parliament Building and the Kingo and Fredensborg housing estates. In 2003, Utzon was awarded the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize for his life’s work. After spending his later years in seclusion on Mallorca, Jørn Utzon died in 2008 in a care home in Helsingør, north of Copenhagen.

To this day, his work epitomises the fusion of architecture, light, nature and structural clarity.
