About Poul Kjærholm

The furniture designer Poul Kjærholm is considered one of the most important representatives of Danish design and made a name for himself by skilfully combining traditional craftsmanship and new processing techniques. His affinity for craftsmanship is probably linked to the carpentry apprenticeship he completed before studying furniture design at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. In his designs, Poul Kjærholm orientated himself primarily on designs from the 1920s and 1930s. He was interested in a wide variety of materials, especially steel. It was always important to him that his furniture could be produced in series without compromising on quality. The designer worked for the furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen where he created various seating prototypes. He then worked with Ejvind Kold Christensen from 1955 until his death in 1980. Two years later, Fritz Hansen took over the production and distribution of the so-called Kjærholm collection, a collection of Kjærholm's creations from 1951 to 1967, and continues to do so to this day. These include products such as the PK61 coffee table - today an absolute design classic from Kjærholm's pen
