The Danish designer Poul M. Volther was born in 1923 and after completing a carpentry apprenticeship, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Opposed to short-lived trends, Volther was an advocate of rationalistic design thinking, with designers such as Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen serving as inspiration. Volther also experimented with new materials and approaches, whereby his work was always characterised by Scandinavian functionalism. His chair J110 was recently reissued by Hay, a re-issue that neatly proves that his legendary designs, including the Corona chair, are as contemporary as ever.
