...opens at architekturgalerie am weißenhof, Am Weißenhof 30, 70191 Stuttgart on Thursday April 26th and runs until Sunday July 1st "Image Spaces: Biology and Building", at Museum für Fotografie, Berlin That nature always has the best construction solutions is well understood... Aiming to achieve not only such but also help biologists fundamentally understand natural structures the engineer Frei Otto and biologist Gerhard Helmcke established in 1961 the interdisciplinary research team Biologie und Bauen - Biology and Building - at the Technische Universität Berlin...

The Museum for Communication Berlin presents Divine Golden Ingenious. The Golden Ratio as a Theory of Everything?

...the Museum for Communication Berlin aim to explore the question, and answer, in more detail... For the Museum for Communication Berlin it was therefore important that in order to produce an authentic and authoritative exhibition they present only objects where a direct connection to the Golden Ratio exists, something which wasn't always so simple, for as exhibition curator Katharina Schillinger explains, "objects aren't necessarily stamped with the fact that they have been created according to the principles of the Golden Ratio, rather it is something that was in the original idea or which played a role in the development, but which isn't always so immediately discernible in the final object, and that made finding appropriate examples very challenging" One of the better known, and best documented, examples of an applied use of the Golden Ratio is that of the Swiss architect Le Corbusier who crafted his famed Modulor system of measurement on the correlation of the Golden Ratio with the proportions of the human body, and thus, as justifiably as invariably, a goodly section of the Werkschau is given over to Le Corbusier and his work...

Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee - Rundgang 2016

...As East Berlin's Art and Design College the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee was in many ways symbolic of East Germany's difficult relationship with Bauhaus and the legacy of inter-war functionalism... And so it came to pass that in 1950 the Dutch architect and designer Mart Stam was appointed Rector of the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee, before departing in 1952 under conditions which couldn't exactly be termed as "friendly", even terming them "hostile" would underplay the nature of the relationship which had developed between Stam and the DDR authorities by late 1952...

smow Journal Design Calendar: July 19th 1933 – Bauhaus Closes. For ever.

...1 With this sober protocol dated July 20th 1933, but referring to a meeting held on July 19th 1933, the closing of Bauhaus Berlin, and so the end of the Bauhaus story, is formally confirmed... Four weeks later the "mission" was accomplished Although at that time Bauhaus had formal offers to relocate to either Leipzig or Magdeburg, Mies van der Rohe had already decided that the school would move to Berlin...

smow Journal Design Calendar: 31st January 1961 - Charles Eames Granted Patent for a Side Flexing Shock Mount

"In the development and designing of furniture one prevailing problem is the means for securing parts of the furniture together particularly when the parts are made of thin materials such as plywood or metal. This problem is particularly difficult when a...

smow Journal Design Calendar: 25th January 1970 - Visiona 2 by Verner Panton Opens in Cologne

...In 1965 Verner Panton wowed Cologne with his flying chair concept before in 1967 the, arguably, defining moment in Verner Panton's career was reached when Vitra released the eponymous Panton Chair; a product that so violently altered what we understood about furniture that although initially only produced until 1979, its influence remains unbroken to this today...
