The brothers Timon und Melchior Grau

The design philosophy of the in 1987 established lighting manufacturer Grau (previously Tobias Grau) stands for a symbiosis of artistic vision and technical know-how. From unique sculptural pieces to high-tech lighting for the workplace, Grau repeatedly broke new ground under the leadership of Tobias Grau; works intended to enrich life with light and combine dynamic shapes, elegant surfaces and contemporary lighting experiences.

In 2021 Timon and Melchior Grau, took over leadership of the Grau from their father and with their background in fine art - both brothers studied art at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and the Universität der Künste Berlin - they bring an engagement with contemporary art and its social contextualization into the design of Grau products that has seen them realigned the design concept while remaining true to the company's heritage.

Together with a 150-strong team in Hamburg, Timon and Melchior Grau pursue the goal of designing light not just as a consumer good, but as a medium that arouses emotions and creates social spaces. With their lights, they create magical lighting experiences that sustainably increase people's well-being. Their first creation, the mobile battery-powered light Parrot, was launched in 2018 and offers extraordinary flexibility thanks to intuitive settings for brightness and colon temperature and creates a special atmosphere everywhere.

In addition to product development, Timon and Melchior Grau also explore the effects of light in their artistic projects such as Fire (2021) and Assembly Bonfire (2022). These works often serve as a creative starting point for product development and shape Grau's unique understanding of design.
