Gianfranco Frattini

Gianfranco Frattini – A pioneer of Italian design

Born in Padua in 1926, the architect and designer Gianfranco Frattini graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1953 and initially worked in the practice of his mentor, Giò Ponti, before founding his own architecture and design studio in Milan. His work centred on interior architecture and industrial design, with many of his pieces of furniture and lighting fixtures arising from the practical requirements of his architectural projects.

Frattini collaborated with renowned manufacturers such as Cassina, Artemide, Bernini, Knoll and Acerbis, creating numerous designs that are now regarded as design classics. Among his best-known works are the Boalum lamp (1969/70), developed in collaboration with Livio Castiglioni, as well as the 780/783 side tables designed for Cassina in 1966, whose stackable design made them icons of 1960s Italian design.

In addition to numerous residential properties, shops and offices, Frattini also carried out international projects, including the design of the public areas of the Tokyo Hilton. As a co-founder of the ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale), he was also deeply committed to promoting Italian design. His multi-award-winning works are now featured in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Gianfranco Frattini died in Milan in 2004; his designs are still regarded today as emblematic of timeless Italian design.
