The Vitra Coconut Chair was designed by George Nelson in the mid-1950s, and with its clear forms and its charmingly reduced appearance embodies the design style of the era. The frame of chrome plated steel tube supports the upholstered seat shell, which is reminiscent of an eighth of a coconut. The design classic Coconut Chair is now produced and demonstrated by Vitra.

Design Story

In the design of the Vitra Coconut Chair George Nelson integrated characteristics of the popular design styles of the 1950s, and in doing so created a true design classic. According to George Nelson, the seat shell of fibreglass-reinforced plastic resembles an eighth of a coconut shell: hence, the product's exotic name. The tubular steel frame with struts provides the Coconut Chair, manufactured and distributed today by the Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra with a stable footing. In addition to the Vitra Coconut Chair George Nelson also developed many other designs, designs which define post-war American design and thus played an important role in the development of post war design culture.
