With the design and the construction of the Vitra Standard SP chair ("Siège en plastique", engl. "Plastic seat") the French designer Jean Prouvé concentrated on the statics: Because on the hind legs bear the greatest burden they were designed with triangular sheet steel, while for the lower legs more refined thin tubular steel legs suffice to overcome the load. Today Vitra produce the design classic in a version with seat and backrest made of ASA Plastic and a base made of sheet steel and round tubular steel.

Design Story

Original Standard SP chair from Jean Prouvé and Vitra

When realising the design and construction of the Vitra Standard SP chairs Jean Prouvé concentrated purely on static considerations: Because the hind legs bear the greatest burden they need to be most stable, and hence are crafted from triangular shaped sheet steel. Conversely the relatively light load on the front of the chair allows for thin tubular steel legs and thus a charming formal contrast. Thus because static considerations were the base thinking behind the chair's design, the chair exists significantly distant from other chair designs and represents a successful crossover object between architecture and design. Today Vitra produce the Prouvé design classic with seat and backrest made of robust ASA plastic and base made of sheet steel and tubular. The classic wooden Standard Chair is alternatively available. Just like the original Standard chair by Jean Prouvé, the Standard SP is also part of the Vitra manufacturer's warranty programme.
