The B 9 nesting tables originate from the most formative phase of Marcel Breuer's work: in the 1920s, when the young designer was busy at Bauhaus, he experimented with steel tubing, thereby contributing significantly to the definition of the popular Bauhaus style. Invariably influenced by the proximity of the Bauhaus to the Junkers aircraft factory in Dessau, Marcel Breuer designed a number of pieces of furniture from the industrial material, including the popular B 3 club chair, known colloquially as the Wassily armchair. After his time at the Bauhaus Marcel Breuer emigrated to America where he continued his co-operations with Walter Gropius and completed numerous architectural projects in Europe and the United States. Marcel Breuer died in New York in 1981. One of the most important architects and designers of modernism, Marcel Breuer's designs almost uniquely combine aesthetics and functionality; an excellent example of his skills is provided by Breuer's B 9 nesting tables, works that have been produced since the Bauhaus period by Thonet. Through the addition of a glass table top Thonet have slightly modified the classic B 9 and thereby created an even lighter, more transparent aesthetic. The four different sized tables are also sold separately.
