Charlotte Perriand

Charlotte Perriand (October 24, 1903 - October 27, 1999) studied interior design at the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs School of Applied Arts in Paris between 1921 and 1925 before turning her focus to furniture design: causing a sensation from the very beginnings with her Bar Sous le Toit at the Paris Fall Salon in 1927, an installation constructed from nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminium. During the same period, Charlotte Perriand's long-standing collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier began in the latters studio at rue de Sèvres 25, Paris, a cooperation which produced various design classics, which today are produced by Cassina. Perriand significantly influenced the collaborative work by adding approachable elements to Le Corbusier's rather cool, rational designs. In 1940, the architect travelled to Japan as a consultant in the field of arts and crafts, which also influenced her own works. Back in Paris, from 1946 she realized projects for private clients as well as for state-owned companies and institutions such as Air France or the United Nations.
