Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel

The designers Nanna Hauberg and Jørgen Ditzel first exhibited their furniture designs while studying at the Copenhagen Art Academy and after their marriage in 1946 founded a joint design studio in the Danish capital. In addition to jewellery, they also designed textiles and furniture; designs which were awarded the silver medal in 1951, 1954 and 1957 and a gold medal at the 1960 Triennale in Milan. The proportions of their twin daughters Lulu and Vita were used for her ND54 children's high chair, which premiered at the Danish arts and crafts exhibition in 1955 and is now produced by Carl Hansen. After Jørgen Ditzel's early death in 1961, Nanna Ditzel continued to work as a designer. She moved to London in 1969, where she founded the international furniture and design house Interspace, which in the following years would develop into a renowned institution for experimental design. At the end of the 1980s Nanna returned to Denmark, where she founded a design and furniture workshop in Copenhagen. With her simple, purist designs and her unconventional and courageous use of colours, Nanna Ditzel has established herself as one of the most internationally recognized designers in Denmark.
