Care Leather furniture should not be exposed to direct sunlight and a minimum distance of 30 cm should be maintained between object and heat sources to avoid the leather drying out and hardening. To maintain leather as soft and supple, and to maintain the natural protective film against water and grease, we recommend that once or twice a year all leather furniture be treated with a mild cleaner. Superficial dirt can be removed with a damp cloth, taking care not to wet the leather or exert selective pressure. Vigorous rubbing should also be avoided. For cleaning special leather cleaner in foam or liquid form is recommended. Small smudges or pencil stains are best removed with a colourless eraser, liquid spills should be immediately dabbed with a cloth and if necessary wiped with a little clean water. Aggressive processes such stain removers, turpentine, shoe polish, etc. should never be used to treat leather.

How do I recognise an original Brno Chair?

The logo "KnollStudio" and the signature of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are engraved on the frame.

Design Story

The development of the Mies van der Rohe Brno chair is closely linked to that of the the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic. One of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's most important designs and a genuine landmark of modern architecture, the Villa Tugendhat emerged parallel to the Barcelona Pavilion, and as with the Pavilion Mies van der Rohe not only designed the building but also the furniture. And here the elegant cantilever chair with the unpronounceable name arises: named after the Czech city in which it was born 24 Knoll Brno chairs could originally be found in the dining room of the Villa Tugendhat. In keeping with the sophisticated elegance of the house - situated on the hillside, with a flat roof raised on stainless steel columns and featuring a broad glass front - the Mies van der Rohe Cantilever is designed with extraordinary grace and comfortable padding, yet without its character and structure disturbing the purist impression. Typical of Mies van der Rohe's formal language, the Brno chair is reduced to its essential elements and brings them into a stunning aesthetic context. Knoll International produces the design classics from flat steel in either a high-gloss or satin chrome plated finish and upholstered in a range of leathers. The upholstery is realised via a foam covered hardwood internal frame with no-sag springs.
