Although the 7 Fauteuil tournant or LC7 Swivel Chair is part of the Cassina LC Collection, its designer is not Le Corbusier, the designer who was largely responsible for the other furniture of the series, but his younger colleague Charlotte Perriand. Originally designed for Perriand's private apartment in Paris she however exhibited the round swivel chair at the 1929 Salon d'Automne together with the LC armchairs, sofas and tables: and thus it was added to the family.

How do I recognise an original 7 Fauteuil tournant (LC7 swivel stool) from Cassina?

Each piece of furniture from the "Cassina i Maestri Collection" is authenticated by a stamp with the designer's signature and a unique identification number.

What is the new name of the LC7 swivel stool from Cassina?

In September 2022 the LC7 swivel stool was renamed Fauteuil tournant by Cassina.

Why have the Cassina products of the LC collection been renamed?

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Cassina iMaestri collection in 2023, it was agreed with the heirs and foundations of Le Corbusier®️, Pierre Jeanneret®️ and Charlotte Perriand®️ to return to the objects original French names. The prefix "LC" has therefore be removed from the affected products, and now onlw the number is listed together with the product name (e.g. 7 Fauteuil tournant).

Design Story

The LC7 Swivel Chair was designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1927 for very personal reasons: it was originally created for her apartment on the Place Saint-Sulpice in Paris, before in 1928 it was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and a year later appeared at the Salon d'Automne Paris as part of the LC Collection, and co-signed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Today the chair is, and as with all objects in the LC Collection, exclusively produced by the Italian manufacturer Cassina who owns the rights to the LC Collection and whose own logo accompanies the signature of the designer and an identification number as your guarantees of the objects originality. The designer Charlotte Perriand worked for over 10 years with Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret - a time which saw the emergence of many commercially and critically acclaimed furniture designs: and also a collaboration that saw all sides positively influence one another. Following her departure from Paris and Le Corbusier Charlotte Perriand spent many years in Asia, where she set about teaching local craftsmen the possibilities inherent in combining traditional crafts with modern production technology: a combination which is clearly evident in her LC7 Swivel Chair and its mix of industrial and natural materials such as tubular steel, and an object which also combines a visually attractive form with a high level of seating comfort.
