Design Story

The American designer George Nelson created the Nelson Bench in 1946, shortly after the founding of his own design studio. Today, it is produced by the Swiss manufacturer Vitra, a company whose collaboration with Nelson started in the 50s. Particularly known for his role as Design Director of the American furniture company Herman Miller, a position he held for some 25 years, Nelson was a key figure in American design scene and was in many ways responsible for helping develop the careers of designers such as Charles and Ray Eames or Alexander Girard, whose designs today are also manufactured and distributed by Vitra. In addition many of George Nelson's designs have subsequently become icons of so-called "Mid-Century Modern", including the Nelson Bench - a work which reflects Nelson's penchant for architectural forms and techniques. The seat, which does not consist of a flat plate, but several high-quality wooden slats, thus making the Vitra Bank a universal object applicable in and for numerous settings.
