Each element of your personal USM Haller unit can be individually configured with, for example, drop-down and extension doors. Discover even more individuality in smow USM configurator.

FAQ

?
Should the answers to your questions not be found here, our service team can be contacted Mon-Fri, 9 am - 5 pm and Sat, 9 am - 5 pm via 031 981 40 67.

Will my USM Haller Sideboard XL be delivered fully assembled?

Ideally yes. However this type of USM Haller unit can be particularly bulky/heavy and the delivery method is therefore always dependent on the local conditions at your home/office. Please contact our USM Service Team to discuss the options.

Is it possible to add extension doors and/or drop-down doors to a USM Haller Sideboard XL at a later date?

As a modular system retrofitting doors to USM Haller units is in principle not a problem. Drop-down doors can be added by anyone with minimal technical skills. The addition of extension doors is however a little more complicated and as such should only be undertaken by trained specialists.

Are the extension doors of the USM Haller Sideboard XL closed on all sides?

No. The extension doors are in principle an extension shelf with a door front. The other three sides are open. Should you want a closed compartment you can order the additional metal box insert: USM Inos metal box insert for extension door.

Design Story

The Design

USM Haller furniture originated in 1963 from a collaboration between the USM company owner Paul Schärer and the architect Fritz Haller, the former asking the later to design a furniture system for the USM Office Pavilion in Münsingen, Switzerland. In 1969 series production of the USM Haller furniture system, began. Characteristic for the for the USM units is their systemic nature: The basic idea that furnishings are not a static state but a dynamic process. Consequently the USM Haller system is modular and can be adapted to meet your individual. And then changed to meet your changing requirements. The heart of the design is a small ball of chrome plated brass balls which holds everything together. Around the ball are attached steel tubes, the tubes build a skeleton into which is ultimately "clothed" by metal and glass panels. USM furniture began principally as an office furniture with , for example, the USM sideboard XL being perfect as a filing cabinet: however, thanks to its versatility USM Haller is becoming ever more an obvious and elegant solution for home furniture.

Production

USM steel tubes for the prouduction of USM Haller units

The steel panels for USM Haller units are produced powder coated in the 15 standard USM colours. Should however you require a custom colour, USM Haller can offer any RAL colour, assuming a minimum order volume is achieved! USM sideboards can if required also be supplied glass panels. In addition to the ecologically respectful manufacturing processes, the high quality of both raw material and finished product helps ensure the sustainability of the USM Haller product families. The Swiss company believes that the environment is better product through products with long product life. The use of high quality materials ensures the long life of the USM furniture while with their modular adaptability there is no need to dispose of a USM Haller unit. Simply, rebuild it as your needs change. In 2008 USM was awarded the Greenguard Indoor Air Quality certification for the environmentally friendly production of furniture.

Designer

Fritz Haller was born on 23 October 1924 in Solothurn, Switzerland. The qualified carpenter worked for various architects before establishing his own architecture studio in 1949. In addition to numerous buildings, including schools, office buildings, production halls and apartment buildings, in collaboration with USM company owner Paul Schärer Fritz Haller designed the USM Modular Furniture System: a system for which he had been rewarded with numerous international prizes. In 2001, the furniture system was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Beyond the modular furniture system Fritz Haller also developed three modular construction system - the so called mini/midi/maxi system: Mini for residential buildings & offices, Midi for high installed building and Maxi for industrial buildings. Fritz Haller died on 15 October 2012th in Solothurn.

Historical Context

The USM Haller sideboards have their origins in functionalism. Functionalist principles, such as the popular maxim "form follows function" were already en vogue in Bauhaus, but only really achieved a global popularity in the years after the Second World War. Characteristic of the 1950s and 60s was the concept of "good form" and designers such as Dieter Rams, Max Bill or Wilhelm Wagenfeld; designers who today are fondly remembered for their many timeless design classic. Fritz Haller's furniture is reduced in the functionalist sense of a clear structure, the function always dominating, while through the avoiding of fashionable trends the design has a classic, timeless, aesthetic.

To determine the value of the original USM Haller furniture a price comparison was made with VW Beetle.. 1 Kilo USM cost the same as 1 Kilo Beetle. Foto: Bundesarchiv, B 145 Bild-F038788-0014 / Schaack, Lothar / CC-BY-SA

Manufacturer

The history of the USM furniture systems begins in 1885, when Ulrich Schärer founded a hardware store and locksmith business in Münsingen near Bern. Following the addition of window fittings in the 1920s and general contract sheet metal fabrication in 1946 the way was slowly paved for the production of metal furniture. Just no-body knew it!. For it wasn't until 1963, when Paul Schärer commissioned Fritz Haller to design office furniture for the USM Office Pavilion in Münsingen that the furniture system we all know first saw the light of day. Fritz Haller had already supervised the construction of the USM factory and office building in Münsingen as an architect. In 1969 the USM furniture system then entered series production and general sale. In 1988 the USM modular furniture systems was classified as a work of applied art and design and thus protected by copyright. Since the 1960s the USM Haller modular furniture system has been constantly expanded and further developed so that today in addition to USM filing cabinets and sideboard, the USM Haller table collection forms a central part of the company's portfolio. Unlike window shutters, the production of which was discontinued to allow the company to concentrate on furniture fabrication.
