Design Story

Plane secretary by Müller Small Living

Designer

Born in Bonn in 1976, Felix Stark, designer of the Secretary Plane completed an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker before studying industrial design. His understanding of these two branches can be witnessed in his furniture designs such as the Plane secretary, Plane wardrobe and Plane bed, all for Müller Small Living. In context of his design studio Formstark Felix Stark conceptualises and plans product design, concepts of space, retail design and film sets and has worked with clients such as the Bauhaus University Weimar, Red Bull and Porsche Design Group. Fundamental to the work of the form Felix Stark is a holistic approach, which takes issues relating to the target group, innovation and sustainability into account.

The Design

The advantage of a Secretary is, in addition to its reduced dimensions, the optimal use of space which results from the integrated drawers. Müller Small Living's Plane secretary by Felix Stark draws on this principle of reduction, including optical, in a remarkably minimal desk. The 18 mm thick birch plywood of the Plane secretary are coated with white melamine resin and are completed by edging in black or birch - a contrast that highlights the fine lines of the reduced desk. The real beauty of the Plane secretary however is the sophisticated functionality, functionality that underscores the majesty of the a secretary as a furniture genre. Two drawers and a cable outlet with magnetic aperture and a second storage level serve to aid workplace organization. Optionally, the front of the drawers and the aperture are available in walnut.

Manufacturer

Although Müller Small Living was established in 1869 in the northern German town of Bockhorn, the essence of the modern company can be traced to a decision made some 100 years after its founding. Under the then and current Managing Director Dierk Müller the production focus was shifted entirely to high quality, modern furniture design. One of the first products in the revamped portfolio was the Stacking bed by Rolf Heide. Launched in 1969 at the Cologne Furniture Fair, the wooden bed is not only a design classic, but also marks Müller Small Living's transformation. Building from this successful design Müller Small Living have developed a broad portfolio of products, many formally reduced in the style of Felix Starr's Plane secretary.
