Design Story

Design

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are known for unconventional, playful designs which combine modern materials and innovative ideas, true to the motto: "Design should be seen as a way of producing a certain diversity in series, a way of trying to escape authoritarianism, of handing the job over to the user ". With the Vitra Corniches, small plastic wall shelves, they have created objects that meet these demands in an endearing fashion. Inspired by rock outcroppings, ledges where you can securely place objects before jumping in the depths below, the small, asymmetrical Corniches wall shelves are neither in their application nor in their arrangement clearly defined - and thus a highly individual piece of furniture. Thus, the Vitra Corniches can act as a book shelf, daily helper or a place on which to present beloved small objects - or simply as a shiny ornament in their own right.

The brother's collaboration with Vitra began in 2000 with the office furniture system Joyn; since then, the Bouroullec brothers have enriched the Swiss furniture manufacturer's Home Collection with innovative designs including the flexible room divider Vitra Algue.

In addition to the Corniches Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have designed a wide range of products for Vitra.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer of Corniches, Vitra, emerged mid-20th century from a Swiss construction company store. In 1953 the company owners Willi and Erika Fehlbaum decided too produce furniture after they had discovered an Eames chair in a New York and wanted to bring the Eames designs in Europe. From that initial fascination with one design studio emerged a collection of established furniture classics, from the likes of Verner Panton, George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi. However Vitra are not only interested in established design classic, but also future design classics, as such the company work closely with designers such as Maarten van Severen, Hella Jongerius and Jasper Morrison. Beyond production the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, has helped establish Vitra's reputation for the renowned international contemporary architecture developed.
