Design Story

Since 1934 the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen has been connected with the Danish designer Arne Jacobsen. With the Series 7 a revolutionary family of chairs was created in the 1950s, but only after Fritz Hansen were not fully convinced by Arne Jacobsen's legendary three-legged Ant chair. The subsequent four-legged Series 7 Chair became a classic of modern furniture history and can be combined with frames of various heights. In the case of the Series 7 Armchair the classic design is complemented and extended by practical armrests made of the same wood veneer and chromed steel tubing: and therefore offers both extra comfort and a solid and healthy sitting position. Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen succeeded with the Series 7 chairs not only in terms of achieving an innovative design, the production process of the seats was equally innovative. Although the lamination process used existed since the 1920s it was perfected in Arne Jacobsen's chair series. The technique was fully exploited by the use of steam in the moulding of the glued layers of wood veneer for the Series 7 seat shell, a shell which thanks to its characteristic, unmistakable form bequeath the Fritz Hansen chair its ergonomic value and durability.
