FAQ
How do I recognise an original Barcelona day bed?
The Knoll logo and the signature of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are engraved on the frame.
After Ludwig Mies van der Rohe had received critical acclaim with his 1929 Barcelona chair, he built on that in 1930 with the Barcelona sun lounger. The famously noble, monumental style of Barcelona Chairs was conceived to provide appropriate seating for the Spanish royal couple during their visit to the German Pavilion at the World Expo 1929 in Barcelona; the subsequently designed Barcelona Day Bed as a domestic item for the contemporary home. Crafted from a mix of hardwood and tubular steel with premium leather covers the Barcelona Day Bed also features a neck roll matching leather for extra comfort. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was not only famed for his furniture design, but also for his architecture, and as the artistic director of the 1927 Weißenhofsiedlung buildng exhibition in Stuttgart, for whom he also designed several apartment buildings.
