Werner Aisslinger

Born in Nördlingen in 1964, Werner Aisslinger creates experimental designs for international brands such as Thonet, Vitra, Moroso, Rolf Benz, Magis, Cappellini, Axor, Kaldewei or Foscarini. For Aisslinger limits of design are a misnomer; styles and colour worlds are largely a thing of the past and the collage ability of a piece of furniture comes to the fore: a wide variety of favourite pieces should be easy to combine with a contemporary interior, regardless of whether it is an antique cupboard from grandma or a found item from the flea market. Werner Aisslinger thus characterizes a style-defining design approach that focuses on high-quality craftsmanship and materials as well as modern manufacturing technologies.

Werner Aisslinger, and his studio aisslinger, have realised projects worldwide in a variety of genres, including, furniture design, lighting design, transportation design and exhibition design. One of Aisslinger best-known works is the Loftcube project, a modular living system that can be placed almost anywhere, even in the most remote forest, on the beach or on the roofs of buildings, and which blends functionally and transcends boundaries into its surroundings. The "Hemp Chair" from 2012 is the world's first monobloc chair made from natural fibres and represents a radical change in our material culture in the direction of sustainability. The table 1140 for Thonet follows another typical Aisslinger theme: versatility. The all-round wooden table is at the centre of social interaction in the private domain and at the same time effortless fulfils the varying requirements in the workplace.

Aisslinger's work has been shown in design exhibitions and museums around the world, has received awards such as the Red Dot Design Award, the Compasso d'Oro and the German Design Award, and is represented in important collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which included his Juli Chair in the permanent collection in 1996, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Museum Neue Sammlung, Die Neue Sammlung Munich and the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein.
