The Designers
Ray Kaiser and Charles Eames, arguably the best-known designer couple in American post-war modernism, became acquainted with one another during their studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1940 where Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen were preparing for the MoMA's "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition. And where they won first prize for their innovative Organic Chair design. A year later, Charles and Ray Eames married and founded their Eames Office design studio in Los Angeles; and which helped shape furniture history for more than four decades. The Eames' first attracted a great deal of attention with the process they developed for the three-dimensional moulding of plywood. Later they experimented with new materials such as fiberglass or synthetic resin and created designer furniture objects which still count amongst the greatest classics in the history of design.
Eames accessories - design classics from the Eames House
Ray and Charles Eames achieved fame through contemporary Vitra design classics such as the Eames Lounge Chair or the Eames Plastic Chairs. In addition to these design icons of American Mid-Century Modern, the designer duo also created numerous home accessories, which can be found in the so-called "Eames House" in Pacific Palisades, a district of Los Angeles. The property, also known as Case Study House No. 8, was designed and built in 1949 by Charles and Ray Eames and served as both a home and a studio. From their travels, the Eames' always brought with them objects and collectibles which told stories and with which they decorated their living spaces, and thus became part of their lives. Standing on the floor of the Eames House for over 50 years has been a bird figure, an object of American folk art, and which caught the attention of the Swiss manufacturer Vitra who today distribute it as the Eames House Bird. In 1945, another Eames design classic was born, the Eames Elephant Plywood, a character who recently went into production and who has proved as popular addition to the Vitra Eames Collection.
