Designer
Before studying architecture Michael Hilgers trained as a cabinetmaker, and following completion of his studies established his design studio ! Idea : in Berlin from where he develops niche products that meet a high level of functionality. Nothing that is purely beautiful, and nothing that exists a thousand times, leaves Hilgers creative workshop; rather, and as with the wall mounted bureau Flatframe for Müller Small Living Hilgers produces products which in their simplicity of function solve everyday problems. With Deskbridge, for example, not only can the computer monitor be placed at eye level via the bridge-like desk attachment but desk accessories can be efficiently stored. In addition to product design Michael Hilgers also develops retail and interior design for international labels, while for Müller Small Living he has also designed the wall mounted bureau Flatmate, the wall mounted bureau Flatbox and the Secretary Flatmate.
The Design
As just 52.6 cm high, 70 cm wide and 5.5 cm depth the wall secretary Flatframe is perhaps the smallest object of its kind, yet offers everything a mini home office needs: space for a laptop, a magnetic, rear wall for notes and a holder for Tablets, mobile phone or more analogue writing utensils. A multiple plug socket completes, and perfects, the home office. Because Flatframe can be mounted at any height on the wall, it is suitable as both a sitting and a standing workstation. Müller Small Living produces Michael Hilgers' elegant design in birch plywood and optionally with a white surface coating and a range of colours. The outer side of the counter top can optionally be used as a picture frame: in the closed state Flatframe can be used as picture frame and as such hides its proper function.
Manufacturer
Although Müller Small Living were established in 1869 in the northern German village of Bockhorn, the company's current portfolio owes its origins to a decision to focus on designer furniture taken some 100 years after the company's founding. Under current Managing Director, Dierk Müller, production was switched in 1969 to exclusively high quality, contemporary furniture . One of the longest serving products in the Müller Small Living portfolio is the Stacking bed by Rolf Heide. Presented at the 1969 Cologne Furniture Fair the wooden bed is not only a design classic, but also marks the transformation of the company into a contemporary design company. Beyond Stacking bed Müller Small Living have developed a portfolio of largely formally minimalist and functional furniture, formally minimalist and functional furniture very much in the style of Michael Hilgers wall mounted bureau Flatframe.
