Furnishing small balconies – 7 tips for your balcony design
With small balconies or loggias that do not offer as much space as a terrace or a spacious garden, you should be clear from the very beginning about how you plan to use your balcony before setting up. Such considerations also depend on factors such as the direction in which your balcony is oriented: while south-facing balconies get the most sun and are therefore best suited for sunbathing and a small herb garden, balconies in other orientations will be most optimally used at specific times of the day. And regardless of orientation and use, most people prefer their balcony to have easy-care greenery and cozy, cheerful furnishings. So that even small balconies develop living room qualities in summer, we have put together a few tips that will help you to set up your balcony in a space-saving, functional and appealing fashion.

1. Planning matters
Before you buy furniture for your balcony, it is advisable to measure the area exactly and to go through a few possible variants using sketches. An important rule of thumb: in order that you can happily move around on your balcony, half of the floor should remain free.
2. The right furniture for my little balcony
The furniture should ideally be rather small, dainty and of course as practical as possible, proportional to the balcony. Instead of solid outdoor armchairs, it is recommended to use stools, small side tables, folding chairs and folding tables or, for example, folding hanging tables. Garden chairs and tables, such as the classic Fermob balcony furniture, can be easily set aside and stored in a space-saving manner during the winter. Loungers or bean bags are best combined with sun protection and a side table can be arranged on which books or drinks can be placed.
3. Use balcony space efficiently
For small balconies, it is recommended to include walls and railings in your planning. Instead of using large planters, it is best to use vertical greenery or to plant classic balcony boxes on the railing. Space-saving hanging tables such as the practical Fermob balcony table are just the right choice here.
4. A harmonious colour concept for the balcony
So that small balconies appear harmonious, the colour concept is best kept simple: a basic tone that is combined with one or two colours creates a calm atmosphere. Strong colours can also be used on the balcony, and which shine in the sun and ensure a good mood.
5. Don't forget the flooring
To make your small balcony appear a bit larger, if possible, choose the flooring so that it is similar in type or colour to that of the adjacent rooms.
6. Skilfully use balcony plants
The balcony planting creates a very individual atmosphere depending on personal taste and can also serve as a privacy screen so that no further device is necessary.
7. Balcony lighting and accessories for a cosy oasis of well-being
Your balcony becomes really cosy in combination with suitable accessories such as pillows or blankets. Whereby a highlight are energy-saving, portable battery lights, which wirelessly create a particularly cosy and homely atmosphere and withstand light rain showers.
