Finn Juhl

Born in Frederiksberg in 1912, the Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl played a major role in establishing Danish design as a byword for high quality and first class design. After studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Finn Juhl founded his own office for furniture design and interior architecture in 1945; however, his highly sculptural furniture designs were at first not appreciated in Europe and consequently Finn Juhl's career started in the USA where Holland, Michigan based manufacturer Baker Furniture produced numerous of his designs. Success did however come in Europe and throughout the 1950s and 60s Finn Juhl advanced to become one of the most respected of Scandinavian furniture designers. In addition to his furniture Finn Juhl was also a much in demand interior designer - one of his most famous commissions also being in America, namely the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. - and a designer of household and office accessories of which his wooden Turning Tray through Architectmade is a particularly fine example.
