Børge Mogensen

Following his apprenticeship as a carpenter, designer Børge Mogensen studied furniture design at the prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint, whose assistant he was from 1945 to 1947. From 1942 to 1950, Mogensen was head of furniture at the Association of Danish Consumer Cooperatives, FDB, which had set itself the task of developing furniture at affordable prices. During this time, Børge Mogensen designed numerous individual pieces and series, which were always strongly influenced by his teacher Kaare Klint. From 1950, Mogensen was represented by his own architectural office in Copenhagen, where he developed products for a wide variety of Danish furniture manufacturers. Like Kaare Klint, Mogensen's focus was on the development of modular, functional furniture that was versatile and affordable for the average person. He was inspired by very different traditional styles, such as in the case of the Hay J42 chair of the 19th century Shaker furniture.
