The SAS Collection

Series 7 chair by Arne Jacobsen

The SAS Hotel in Copenhagen - Arne Jacobsen's Gesamtkunstwerk

The SAS Hotel in Copenhagen was realised in the years 1956 to 1960 by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, who designed the building from the architecture to the interior as a Gesamtkunstwerk. Since construction and interior were subjected to drastic modifications in the following years, however, Arne Jacobsen's original design was lost. At the time of its creation, the SAS Hotel was heavily criticized for its architecture, it was after all the first skyscraper in Copenhagen, which was also in the then dominant international style. However today the work stands as a milestone in European architecture and the furniture Arne Jacobsen designed for the hotel is today considered classics of the modern age and enjoys a wide popularity.

Swan Chair from Fritz Hansen

Drop Chair by Arne Jacobsen

Design icons of the modern age

The SAS Collection includes Arne Jacobsen's most famous furniture designs, all used in the SAS Hotel or designed for the hotel. These include the Swan and Egg Chair and the Drop chair. Produced by Fritz Hansen the furniture is characterized by its flowing, organic shapes and ergonomically adapts to the body. Formally related is the Series 7 chair of the SAS Collection. Designed in 1955 for Fritz Hansen, the chair Series 7 with its characteristic seat shell has become the most successful product of the Danish furniture manufacturer and was also represented in the SAS Hotel. No less iconic are the AJ lamps designed by Arne Jacobsen for the hotel and produced by the Danish lighting design expert Louis Poulsen. Characteristic is the unmistakable shape of the lamp head, which Arne Jacobsen repeated throughout the AJ table, wall and floor lamps.

A Monarch Among the Lounge Chairs - Egg Chair by Fritz Hansen

For the lounge area of the SAS Hotel Arne Jacobsen designed the famous Egg Chair lounger with associated ottoman, a work which still adorns many hotel lobbies. Fritz Hansen's Egg is representative of the first-class quality of the Danish company's products: the history of the furniture manufacturer goes back to 1872 and in the intervening century and a half has accompanied the development of many designs that are today among the most relevant in modern design history. Since the 1960s, the furniture design classic has been produced according to the original specifications of Arne Jacobsen from high quality materials, and today the Egg Chair is available in a variety of fabrics, including several fine leather finishes.
