Achille Castiglioni

Achille Castiglioni is the middle of three brothers: three brothers who were influential in the development of Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Achille Castiglioni is particularly well known for those objects which he developed in collaboration with his brother Pier Giacomo largely in the form of readymades - the most famous representative of which is the Mezzadro stool from 1957 where the Castiglionis transformed a commercial tractor seat into a freestanding designer stool. By a similar process Achille Castiglioni also designed the folding table Cumano for Italian manufacturer Zanotta: he supplemented the form of a conventional bistro table with a folding joint and added a hoe for suspension. In addition to his work as a designer, Achille Castiglioni taught design. Achille Castiglioni died in 2002.
